Ipods: Part of the List of School Materials?

Gabriel Garza

In the last two decades, new technologies have filled up our world of consuming electronics and gadgets. There are positive things in these components that have made people's lives easier, but there are also negative things that have enslaved people. The Apple IPod is probably one of the most influential gadgets in the past years. Although most of the people say and think that IPods affects college students negatively, there are higher education institutions that think that IPods are educational.

John Brooks, a senior at Central Michigan University states in his essay the negative effects of IPods in students. He says: "...(this effects) include distraction to surroundings, delayed response time, loss of social skills, laziness, deafness, brain tumors, and of course, cockiness." He tells his experience in college and agrees like most people, that having an IPod during school days is a great distracter.

On the other hand, Brock Red mentions in his article in The Chronicle of Higher Education that Duke University administrators decided to give out IPods to all their freshmen students. “Besides wining the heart of the students and earn easy publicity, they impulse exploration of new teaching technologies.” He also mentions: “A number of professors at Duke say that they have found uses for their students' IPods, usually employing the devices as sound recorders with the help of microphone attachments, or as portable storage drives, since they can be used to store all kinds of large files and not just music. Students could use them for fast note taking and to transfer research data from dormitory computers to laboratory machines.” This is a great idea if it is imposed correctly and students use it wisely. In today's world we should take advantage of all type of technologies that help us make our lives efficient and seek for success.
